Sonic the Hedgehog
Fast, blue and the main character of the series. He's always the one to stop Eggman's plans of taking over the world. Sonic is a happy-go-lucky type of person.
He loves the action no matter what (except Amy). He was the first person next to Shadow to induce a "Chaos Control" with just 1 (fake) emerald.
With a bit of effort he can even break the sound barrier.
Miles "Tails" Prower
Sonic's best friend. Tails has the ability to fly by spinning his two tails like a helicopter.
He also excels in mechanical knowledge and can repair pretty much any type of device.
Tails was the one responcible for the major redesign of the XTornado, which then included Robotic transformations, higher speeds and...no landing gear.
Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles is the Guardian of the Master Emerald and a treasure hunter. He's rather hardheaded and is quickly to resort to violance.
In knuckles first appearance he got tricked by Eggman in thinking that Sonic was out to steal his Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds.
Later Sonic and Knuckles became friends/rivals and would often join forces to defeat eggman.
Shadow the hedgehog
Shadow was created 50 years ago aboard the space colony ARK by Dr. Gerald Robotnik (Eggman's Grandfather) as the ultimate lifeform.
Soon after, the GUN Forced infiltrated the ARK.They killed all the personnel aboard.
In a final attempt to save Shadow, Dr. Gerald's granddaughter, Maria launched Shadow in a probe towards the earth.
Shadow was then captured and put to sleep by the GUN forces. In Sonic Adventure 2 Dr. Eggman frees Shadow from his sleep.
but by the end of the story Shadow is once again launched towards earth, this time losing all of his memories.
Shadow can use the special ability known as "Chaos Control" without a Chaos Emerald, thought without one it's much less powerfull.
Rouge the Bat
Rouge is a treasure hunter and a thief with great love for emeralds...Chaos Emeralds.
Though she'd steal any type of jewelry, she has special interest in the Chaos Emeralds due to their unique colours.
Her first appearance was in the game Sonic Adventure 2 where she was a spy for the GUN forces.
She joined Eggman and Shadow, alltogether formed the characters of the dark side story. In Sonic Heroes she, Shadow and Omega formed Team Dark.
Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik 
Dr. Eggman is Scientist with an IQ of over 300. A genius without doubt, but a selfish one.
For reasons unknown he seeks to rule the world and turn it into his own personal themepark Eggmanland.
He's an Expert on the area of robotics and would usualy send masses of them at Sonic.
Among his greatest creation were: E-101 Gamma, E-123 Omega and Hyper Metal Sonic (usualy just refered to as Metal).
E-123 Omega
Omega is the last of Eggman's E-series Robots. In Sonic Heroes Omega was left and forgotten to guard the body of knocked out Shadow (who lost his consciesness when falling from the ARK back to earth).
Omega felt betrayed by Eggman. When Rouge infiltrated Eggman's base and freed Shadow from his capsule Omega decided to join them and hunt down Eggman.
Hyper Metal Sonic
Because all the other robots failed, Eggman decided to make a copy of Sonic.
The result was Metal, a superpowered robot with the ability to fly at even greater speeds than sonic and invoke a Black Shield.
"Metal" was created for the sole purpose of destroying Sonic.Unfortunatly when Eggman copied Sonic's life data he also copied his personality.
Metal now not only thinks HE is the REAL Sonic, but also defies Eggman and even attacks him.
Metal still hunts Sonic in order to prove that he is the real one.
